2022 Awards Winners

The 2022 Awards winners were announced at the recent Waterski & Wakeboard Scotland Annual General Meeting. Read on to find out more about the awards, the nominations we received and our winners.

New for 2022 the Awards provide an opportunity to recognise the people within our community that have produced exceptional performances or given their free time, passion, and energy to develop our sport.

Volunteer of the Year

This award recognises the efforts of a person who has motivated and inspired or has created new opportunities within the sport on a voluntary basis for the benefit of others.

Nominations were received from around the country and included a young volunteer with an ever-present smile on his face at one of our Partner Sites, others who’ve made things, fixed things, and generally contributed to our clubs and site and of course our winner.

When describing our winner nominations included phrases like “he is a tonic to the club”, “he lives and breathes the club”, and “we would be lost without him”. They told us he is religiously there three days a week, every single week come rain, shine or gale force winds to bring the boat in, drive for all the members and often doesn’t take a tea break for hours on end! He doesn’t often ski anymore but continues to support the club in such a big way! If the boat or anything needs fixing, he is their guy, no problem too big!

Congratulations Iain Stewart – Aberdeen Waterski and Wakeboard Club

Performance of the Year

These awards recognise the efforts of athletes who have achieved inspirational performances during the current season. They might have won a medal at a major competition or might even have won multiple medals throughout the year. They might have executed the event or got to the dock against all odds.

Waterski

There were many great performances from Scottish waterskiers this season including Alan Yeoman (Kyle Waterski & Wakeboard Club) who won the Backyard Series and Chris Heron (Town Loch NTS) the Competition Series in the Scotland Nautique Backyard Slalom Series. Chris also made the podium in the Over 35 Men Slalom Category at the 2022 Combined British Youth / Senior National Championships and the GB Team for the 35+ World Championships in France. He was joined in France by Kevin Lochhead who broke the Over 55 Men Slalom Scottish Record and won a silver medal at the British Nationals.

On his way to bringing home a gold medal from the British Nationals in the Over 35 Men Slalom Category our winner also broke the Scottish Record with a brilliant score of 3 buoys at 10.75m (55kph). He then joined Chris and Kevin in France for the 35+ World Championships where he narrowly missed out on the finals. He also achieved another of his goals by running the course at 10.75m (55kph) during training whilst in Florida earlier in the season.

Congratulations Ollie Jessop – Town Loch NTS

Wakeboard

The Wakeboard sub-category was just as competitive as waterski with nominations riders achieving great performances this season. Glen Morgan for example capped off a season where he has shown outstanding dedication with 3rd at the British Cable Wakeboard Nationals at New Forest in early October. Charlotte Docherty had an outstanding first year on the international stage riding for the GB Team in the Under 14 Girls category. In June, she placed 3rd at the WWA World Wake Park Championships and at the IWWF Europeans she came 5th helping the team to an overall 2nd place. She also recently won the U14 Girls British National Champion title before heading to Thailand with the GB Team for IWWF World Championships.

Our winner competed in the 2022 WWA World Wake Park Championships in London in July where she not only took the win in the Traditional format in the U18 Junior Women’s category, making her a World Champion but narrowly missed out on becoming a Double World Champion by coming a close 2nd in the Features format. She also took part in IWWF Europe & Africa Championships in Denmark in August as part of the Team GB squad where she contributed to a team 2nd place. She recently competed in the British Nationals in the New Forest and took the win to become British National Champion before joining Charlotte and the rest of the GB Team in Thailand for the World Championships.

Congratulations Orla Winn – Foxlake & Glasgow Wake Park

Orla couldn’t make the AGM so sent us an acceptance video from the World Championships in Thailand – Watch Now
